He’s closed himself off from the spirit world and plans only on riding out the week and collecting his fat paycheck, and his transition from soft-spoken freeloader to psychic hero is a dramatically thrilling one. The idea that the spirits’ connections to the house were caused due to the location being used for debauchery (drugs, alcohol, sex, etc.) along with vampirism and murder, was a great move in giving the location its own personality.

Alan Hume’s photography – with shots reflected off rotating records and entire rooms seen in the curved reflection of a polished silver teapot – is marvellously stylish.
Clive Revill, the physicist, who attempts to clear the house of its evil, Pamela Franklin, the mental medium and Roddy McDowall the survivor of the previous incursion, are all first-rate. The last-act revelation is a let-down and even somewhat silly, but this remains a top-tier ghost movie, thanks mostly to director John Hough, who privileges atmosphere over logic. There’s a particular scene when the group enters the house that belongs on the all-time best horror camera shots list. Sent on the mission are a physicist, a femme mental medium and a physical medium. Latter is the only survivor of a similar investigation 20 years before when eight scientists were either killed or driven to insanity. Shock value is an important element as audience literally feels the unseen power that exists in the house.
Fischer wanders the house afterwards, attempting to sense psychic energy; in astonishment, he declares the place "completely clear!" But violent psychic activity soon resumes, and Barrett is killed. A varied team of investigators (sceptic, medium, survivor…) descends on the ominous ‘Belasco House’ to confront the possibility of life after death. Where The Legend of Hell House works particularly well is in the hands of director John Hough. British director Hough had emerged from tv’s The Avengers (1962-9) and previously directed Twins of Evil (1971), the third and best in Hammer’s Karnstein trilogy, and would go onto make a good deal of unremarkable Disney and B-budget horror fodder. In addition to competent direction and a well-written screenplay, the film also benefits from a strong cast.

This time he ordered the Gaelic Boxty, which was a potato pancake topped with steak and musrooms. I particularly enjoyed the corned beef Boxty, which is not currently on the menu. For mains, I always go with something corned beef based at Gallaghers. Because corned beef is not easy to find in Ireland, and Gallaghers always has it on the menu! Yes, surprise, surprise, the corned beef-Irish association is more of an Irish-American thing.
In any case, I love corned beef so I usually order it whenever I see it on a menu, at home or abroad. This time, I ordered the Corned Beef Dumplings. The dumplings are similar to Italian gnocchi and were served with corned beef cubes in a mustard sauce. Back then it seemed a clever idea to turn boxty, a thick floppy pancake made with grated potato, into a latter-day tortilla.

The pancakes were filled with a choice of cream-laden mixtures and served to hungry hoards. It was a comfortable distance from boxty’s origins, the word comes from arán bocht tí or poor house bread. One account of boxty tells of a time when households were too poor to own a grater. Instead they punched holes into a hollowed half tin can and using the razor sharp edges to grate the spuds into the mix for pan (thicker soda bread) or griddle (pancake) boxty.
